After a very difficult few days for anyone connected to Manchester, Manchester United have lifted the 2016/17 Europa League title courtesy of a goal in either half from recent additions Pogba and Mkhitaryan.
Having won every other trophy, this marks the first time United have lifted the Europa League trophy, in the process becoming only the fifth team (others are Juventus, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Chelsea) to have won all of UEFA’s three main club competitions (European Cup/UEFA Champions League, Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League).
United could have won with a higher margin with Lingard in particular fluffing his lines after being put through on goal with only the Ajax keeper to beat. Ajax controlled most of the possession as United sat back and soaked up everything the Dutch side mustered to eventually run out comfortable winners.
Ander Herrera has continued to impress under Jose, and was unsurprisingly named the man of the match. There were a lot of unsung heroes on the night – Valencia and Darmian were solid in the fullback positions and yet another clean sheet for Sergio Romero.
So after all the giddy times in course of the now concluded season, Jose Mourinho’s gamble has ultimately paid off, United are back in the Champions League – meaning the red devils are free to pursue reported targets like Lukaku, Griezman and James Rodriguez (all said to favor joining UCL teams). Qualification will also likely boost Jose’s chances of keeping David de Gea and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Manchester.
The match might also have been the last time we see Wayne Rooney (and a few others probably) in a red devils jersey.
Pop the champagne. United are back in the big time. Interesting times ahead. Can the 2017/18 season start already!!!
Hopefully in future, nights like this can be enjoyed in the company of other red devils in our locality.
Go Go Manchester United.
