Barely a week after the window closed, United have been linked with a sensational raid on two of the biggest stars currently plying their trade in Spain’s top flight.
United’s interest in Griezmann and Bale is well documented, having coveted the Welsh winger since his Southampton days, while the Atletico player emerged recently as a target. The Frenchman was reportedly close to moving during the last window, but ultimately stayed due to the Spanish club’s current transfer embargo.
Jose declared interest in Bale over the summer, indicating a willingness to sign the player should Los Blancos show a willingness to do a deal. Madristas have continued to boo the former Spurs player, and with the emergence of Marco Asensio and Isco, Bale’s future is as uncertain as it has been at any point in his time in Spain.
Standing in United’s way to Bale; is Florentino Perez’s resentment over the failed transfer of de Gea previously – evidenced during difficult negotiations for Morata (and Chelsea’s ease) recently. In all likelihood, the Spanish stopper (already linked with a summer move to Madrid) will come up in discussions for Bale.
Even Lukaku looks excited by the prospect of a link-up (LOL)
Conversely, Griezmann’s transfer appears less complicated by virtue of his release clause, which has reportedly dropped to £92m. The likely competition may from Barca – who have a Neymar-sized hole to fill. The Catalans are reportedly monitoring Griezmann while assessing how well Dembele fills the Brazilian’s boots.
Furthermore, Atletico look set to offset the loss of Griezmann by signing Costa from Chelsea. The London club are known to retain a passive interest in the French forward, and may seek to dangle Costa as bait towards snaring the prolific Twenty-six year old forward. United’s interest in Bale could also have direct consequences.
Ironically, having missed out on Mbappe, Madrid are reportedly eyeing Griezmann as a replacement for the injury plagued Welshman. The Madrid rivals are not known to swap players directly often, but did recently with Theo Hernandez moving to the Bernabeu – so the notion cannot be simply discounted based on rivalry.
Perisic has signed new deal dashing United’s hopes of landing the winger
To United’s advantage is Griezmann’s boyhood affinity for the club, plus the presence of pal Pogba. And in a market where Neymar costs about £200m and an inexperienced Dembele worth £135, the former Sociedad winger’s reported release fee represents value which United can easily afford – given the club’s commercial prowess per MEN.
United’s failings on the wings have been apparent for some seasons. a situation which was to be remedied by acquiring Perisic, but with the Croatian signing a contract extension in Italy, focus may now switch to Bale – who is not only a superior option, but is equally capable of delivering quality crosses for Lukaku.
Likewise, Griezmann represents an upgrade on Mata or Lingard, either behind the striker, or on the flanks – where he played before being converted by Simeone. In addition, his prolific abilities as a CF could provide some level of comfort when Zlatan departs – at the expiration of the current one year deal.
How United could line up with the pair #DroolWorthy #NextLevel
While there is no suggestion this is a concluded affair, the thought of the duo lining up at Old Trafford is sensational – yet possible. However, likelihood of either deal getting off the ground will depend largely on United (having a strong season and) qualifying for the Champions League again.
